I am enjoying my break and trying to finish a long to-do list. One of the things that I have been thinking about is how prepared my class is for the reading TAKS test. Since the school district has adopted a new reading textbook, we have followed its program. The problem is that the usual way that we taught reading comprehension has taken a backseat to the stories in the textbook. I know my class is nowhere near my previous classes in their reading comprehension due to this. We have time till the TAKS test but it is going to be a lot of work. The class had a reading passage last week and one of the questions on it asked about how a school was different from a pod. The whole article was talking about whales. One student wrote," We go in a bilding and the sea creaters stay in a group." Another wrote," A school is on land." Yeah, that ain't the answer.
This is a place where I can rant about my life as a third grade teacher who continues to try to get her act together years after graduating college.
It is hard to find teaching blogs where the writer is not all rainbows and unicorns. Teaching is hard work and at times the kids are not fun and you don't feel like anything inspiring is happening in the classroom. It isn't that I don't love teaching, I can't imagine not doing it but I can't handle blogs where the writer never writes about the frustrations of teaching...or of the small paychecks that one receives on a monthly basis.
